Referrals FAQs
Cancer Support – What is an urgent referral? Your GP has arranged for you to see a hospital doctor (specialist) urgently. This is to investigate your symptoms further. You may have some tests to find out what is wrong and if it could be cancer. However more than 9 out of 10 people referred this way are not diagnosed with cancer.
How quickly will I be seen – All Urgent 2 Week Wait Suspected Cancer referrals are processed as quickly as possible. In England a 2 week wait urgent referral means that you should see a specialist within 2 weeks.
For more information and support you can call the confidential Cancer Research helpline, staffed by experienced nurses. Available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040. https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/cancer-symptoms/what-is-an-urgent-referral
If your doctor has referred you to a specialist for further care you will be asked to book your appointment using the ‘NHS e-Referral’ system.
- All patients with non urgent referrals processed on the e-Referral Service are sent a text with a booking reference, password, hospital contact information and what to do next.
- track a referral form: only to be used for cases where the patient has tried to chase the referral themselves and not heard back from the hospital.
- phone us on 01663 745266 only if the patient or relative can not complete the track a referral form.
